Backstroke

Leo Cullum was a giant among New Yorker cartoonists, publishing more than 819 from 1977 to the time of his untimely passing in 2010.  In his obituary, the New York Times observed Leo's "particular affinity for the animal kingdom" that "extended well beyond dogs, cats and mice."  Here's a case in point:  an original hand drawn cartoon published in the New Yorker on July 28, 1997 with the caption "Please, Al.  You know the backstroke scares the children." 

Sharpie pen and black ink wash on 11" x 14" Bristol Board.  The entire piece is protected by a transparent protective overlay and a brown paper cover with a tear sheet from the magazine.  New Yorker copyright sticker and artist's stamp on the reverse side along with a few production notes.  The caption is handwritten on the brown overlay.  Overall, excellent condition. 

Leo Cullum's original New Yorker work is extremely rare.  This piece derives from the private collection of his family.
